Does Water Give You Clear Skin?

Let’s take a deep dive into the relationship between your skin and your water intake. Does clear and hydrated skin have a direct link to how much water you drink?

OBVIOUSLY drinking water is important and healthy. The recommended daily intake of water is 2–3L depending on your age, size and amount of physical exercise you partake in. But if you suffer from acne, hormonal breakouts or dull skin; does extra water intake help with treating your skin?

Our skin is composed of 3 layers the deepest being the subcutaneous tissue, the dermis and the epidermis (the outer layer of our skin), when the epidermis is dehydrated this can cause breakouts, excessive sebum release, flaking and more BUT surprisingly, there is no actual scientific link to the intake of water and the rehydration of the epidermis. This means the environment of the epidermis is mostly reliant on the outside environment (eg weather & topical treatments) and the intake of substances that have an effect directly on bodily hormones (eg sugar).

In one study that I read “Dietary water affects human skin hydration and biomechanics” (link below). The results showed that between two groups, the first that drank less than 3.2L of water a day and the second that drank more than 3.2 L of water a day, the study found that “no relevant changes regarding epidermal barrier and TEWL (Trans-Epidermal Water Loss)”.
